Following a second landmine incident, Thailand has intensified diplomatic tensions with Cambodia, choosing to recall its ambassador and expel Cambodia’s envoy from Bangkok. The decision comes in response to a landmine explosion this afternoon that gravely injured a Thai soldier on patrol.

Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, who also holds the position of interior minister, confirmed the move after receiving details of the incident. The explosion, reported at 4:55 p.m., occurred in Huai Bon, within the Anma Pass located in Nam Yuen district. Sgt. Pichitchai Boonkrach from the 14th Infantry Regiment stepped on the landmine, resulting in the loss of his right leg. Emergency teams evacuated the wounded soldier by 5:18 p.m.

In response, Phumtham stated that the Second Army Region and Royal Thai Army had recommended closing all border checkpoints under military jurisdiction to halt tourist crossings. The government promptly enacted these closures. Thailand also escalated diplomatic measures by recalling its ambassador to Cambodia and ordering the Cambodian ambassador’s expulsion. Discussions regarding additional adjustments to bilateral relations are reportedly underway, as shared by Thai media outlet The Nation Thailand.
