Cambodia dismisses Thai accusations of planting new landmines, causing injuries to five soldiers.
Maly Socheata, undersecretary of state at Cambodia’s Ministry of National Defence, strongly refuted claims made by Thailand that Cambodia is responsible for a landmine explosion that injured several Thai soldiers in An Ses village, Choam Ksant commune and district, Preah Vihear province on the afternoon of July 23.
Socheata emphasized that Cambodia‘s defense ministry categorically denies the allegations, calling them baseless. She explained that Cambodia has repeatedly reminded Thailand that these areas still suffer from remnants of unexploded landmines left over from historical conflicts, which have yet to be fully cleared.
Cambodia urged Thailand to adhere to the agreed-upon patrol routes outlined in the 2000 memorandum of understanding, warning against actions that violate these terms.
Highlighting her disappointment, Socheata remarked that Thailand not only avoids taking accountability for its provocative behavior but also accuses Cambodia of breaching international law, despite Cambodia being a victim of such violations.
She reaffirmed Cambodia’s commitment to resolving border-related issues through peaceful measures and in strict compliance with international legal frameworks.
Socheata added that the defense ministry and Royal Cambodian Armed Forces remain determined to uphold Cambodia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. She assured that Cambodia will safeguard its people and territory steadfastly, regardless of the challenges or cost involved.
