Massive Distributions CEO says U-Pay alliance will speed digital adoption in Cambodia

With the alliance of Massive Distributions and U-Pay which signed an MoU on collaborating to increase the digital foot print for QR payments, it will help speed up the pace of digital commerce in Cambodia.

Victor Kaw has been the Chief Executive Officer of Massive Distributions Co. Ltd (MD) since 2020, bringing more than a decade of experience to the job, thanks to his background working at Citibank, Standard Chartered, Southern Bank, CIMB and Maybank. With his knowledge of mortgage and syndicated loans, portfolio management and credit card and payment industry he built Massive Distributions into a company with more than 10,000 merchants and 25 offices – one in every province in Cambodia.

Companies bring in a BPO company as an external service provider to carry out essential tasks and non-core services.

“This can be in the areas of products and services, data entry, document processing, help desk services, call centre operations, management and provider of loyalty programmes, among many others,” Kaw explained. “In this case, Massive Distributions is the service provider; it performs the role of the BPO.  This outsourcing of non-core or given business processes allows companies to reduce the overall operation costs, simplify operations, as well as maximise productivity by outsourcing them to a service provider that is better suited or has the experience, system and expertise to perform those functions. It also allows companies to better focus their resources, time and attention on other areas that are their core business.”

Massive Distributions was recently involved in setting up and managing loyalty programmes for clients to help them retain customers and promote repeat purchases.

“Studies have shown that if a loyalty programme can be implemented and managed effectively it can potentially help businesses increase purchases of its products or services by 20 percent and greatly improve customer retention,” Kaw said.

“This in other words enables the organisation to focus on what they do best, improve on their core business strengths and be able to bring to their customers better tangible benefits, resulting in more efficient cost structures and better profitability. Real case study examples have proven that in a company with a good loyalty programme 80 percent of the sales come from repeat customers versus 20 percent from new customers and the basket size of each repeat customer tends to grow more than 20 percent over time.”

Massive Distributions is now partnering with U-Pay Digital Co. Ltd, which has a central bank license to offer digital wallet services in Cambodia. MD will facilitate the recruitment of merchants to accept QR payments for U-Pay, onboard the merchants, deploy the QR code or Electronic Data Capture (EDC) terminals and train the merchants on how to use the e-wallet and QR code payment system and promote its use across the country.

“This partnership will expand connectivity, payment EDC terminals as well as QR code merchant acceptance thus digitalising payments across SMEs, local corporates, retail and chain stores in a faster and more efficient manner,” Kaw said, adding, “The economies of scale from the partnership will also bring about greater savings, a wider reach and greater brand recognition and acceptance. The partnership of an e-wallet and a BPO company is probably one of the first such collaborations and we hope it will help to accelerate the digitalisation of payments across Cambodia.”

Kaw says in the very near future, MD will also be providing call centre services to foreign and local corporates to facilitate payment collections, service calls, customer services and help desk functions.
