TikTok has consulted civil society organisations and experts on how best to revamp and refresh the reports. Such consultations have resulted in Transparency Reports that include data that can be downloaded in machine readable formats

Short-form video app TikTok is providing its new transparency reports in 26 languages, including Khmer. It is also setting up an online transparency centre, which will be available in the Khmer language. The centre contains all TikTok’s historical transparency reports including content removal request reports for the first half of this year.

TikTok began releasing reports in 2019 and has added data disclosures including information about the number of suspected underage accounts it removed, as well the number of ads that were rejected for not meeting TikTok’s standards’.

Tik-Tok is owned by China’s Bytedance, which has been investigated by regulators in the US, China and Europe over concerns about its influence on teenage users.

The company has updated its policies on self-harm, suicide and eating disorders and now bans advertisements for fasting apps and weight-loss supplements. It also said it has improved the way it notifies users about why their video was improved.

TikTok’s Transparency Reports include a report on the actions it take to uphold community guidelines and terms of service, a report on legal requests for user information TikTok receives from governments and law-enforcement agencies, a report on government requests to restrict content with TikTok’s response and a report on the number of copyright and trademark content take-down notices and its response.

“TikTok has consulted civil society organisations and experts on how best to revamp and refresh the reports. Such consultations have resulted in Transparency Reports that include data that can be downloaded in machine readable formats. Other enhancements include the use of interactive charts and graphs to better illustrate the data as well as TikTok’s reactions to notices and requests,” the company said.

“The latest changes are part of ongoing efforts by TikTok to continually develop products that make the Transparency Center a one-stop shop to learn about how TikTok moderates and recommends content, develops products, and safeguards people’s information.”

TikTok says it will announce further updates as the transparency centre continues to evolve.
