Ministry of Tourism and Japanese company Yamato Green Co., Ltd. on Thursday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to develop the green belt tourism value chain in the tourism sector.

The purpose of the agreement aims at supporting the Cambodian farmers on the vegetable growing technique and other crops with Japanese technology.  It will help farmers to receive quality and safe vegetable to supply the market especially in the tourism sector such as hotels and restaurants as well as exporting to the Japanese market.

Thong Rathsak, director-general of tourism development and international cooperation at the Ministry of Tourism, said at the event that the MoU will also assist the farmers to grow the vegetable in the green house with new Japanese standards and ensuring the quality and safety food.

“The MoU focuses on four goals: green belt in tourism, tourism industry, agro-tourism, and rural tourism,” he added.

He said that the MoU will last for five years from 2021-2025., and both parties will continue discussing further project. He said that this large-scale development project will be first implemented from Baray district, Kampong Thom province because the district is rich in irrigation systems.

Rathsak said 10 variety of vegetables will be planted and most of which are vegetables grown on the land for a short period of time.

Ratsak stated the ministry encourage the farmers to grow the crops via the Japanese technology and the government will facilitate the farmer’s products to be distributed to the tourism areas and promote the quality and safety vegetables and fruits to the tourism destination in the Siem Reap, Battambang, coastal areas and northeastern parts of the country.
